1. You need a club that has enough loft on it.

So many golfers use drivers that are way too low lofted; often an 8 or 9 degree driver, when in reality they'd play much better with a club that has a 10 degree right up to 13 degree loft. Loft is very forgiving - so strictly speaking the more loft you have on a club - the straighter you'll hit it

2. Keep your energy level low

Don't think because you're hitting a tee shot you have to put everything into it so it goes as far as possible. This results in mishits and in many cases, the ball doesn't go as far.

3. Get the ball placement so its towards the instep of your left foot.

If you position the ball in the middle of your stance, you'll end up hitting the ball way too steep and end up hitting push shots. You want to make contact with the ball on the upswing (opposite when using an iron). The trick is to position yourself behind the golf ball.

4. Forget the driver on most par 5's

Unless you know you for certain you can reach the green in two, you probably don't need to hit the driver. On a 500-yard hole, it'smuch easier-and certainly much smarter-to play 3-wood, 6-iron, 9-iron than driver, 3-wood, half-wedge.

5. Always aim away from trouble

Always aim away from trouble. Don't become overconfident and think you can land the ball on a sixpence. A good rule of thumb is to tee up on the same side as the trouble (trees, water, bunkers), and aim away from it.

6. Treat your clubs with care

Our 6th, and perhaps not essential tip is to treat your clubs with care by buying a set of personalised golf headcovers, the better you treat your clubs - the better they perform!
